A 21-year-old elephant named Zara has been given a second chance at life after being rescued and transferred to a specialist elephant care facility in Mathura, India.
For years, Zara was used as a begging elephant, spending her days carrying heavy loads and traveling long distances in difficult conditions. The harsh lifestyle left her severely underweight and suffering from multiple health problems, including advanced osteoarthritis that affects her movement and causes chronic pain.
Wildlife SOS, the organization that rescued her, reported that Zara arrived weak and anxious but quickly began adjusting to her new environment. Veterinarians immediately started medical evaluations and treatment to address her joint issues, wounds, and malnutrition.

Despite her condition, Zara has shown encouraging signs of recovery. Caretakers say she has already begun exploring her surroundings and enjoying her favorite treats, including fresh watermelon.
The rescue marks the end of a difficult chapter in Zara’s life. She will now receive long-term medical care, proper nutrition, and the opportunity to live in a safer and more comfortable environment free from exploitation.
